Feedback

When it comes to industrial gas distribution, selecting the right equipment is only part of the solution. Understanding how gas is used, the required flow rates, operating pressures and the demands of the application is what ultimately determines whether a system will perform reliably.

Recently, Weldfast worked with one of our distributor partners to support a major UK steel manufacturer that was looking to improve the reliability and efficiency of its gas supply for a thermal cutting operation.

The Challenge

The end user had traditionally supplied propane to its cutting line using a bank of cylinders connected together to feed multiple cutting stations.

While this setup had worked for many years, it created a significant operational challenge.

Because the cylinders depleted at different rates, the gas supply would regularly run low unexpectedly, forcing the entire production line to stop while cylinders were changed. The resulting downtime was disrupting production and reducing overall efficiency.

To eliminate this issue, the customer decided to move away from multiple cylinders and install a single bulk propane vessel that could be refilled on a scheduled basis.

However, this created a new engineering challenge.

The gas now needed to be distributed over a much greater distance while maintaining consistent flow rates and regulated outlet pressure across multiple cutting stations.

The Solution

Working alongside our distributor partner, the Weldfast technical team assessed the application’s operating requirements, including gas consumption, required flow rates, working pressures and the overall layout of the system.

Rather than simply recommending a standard product, we used the customer’s operating data to specify a gas distribution board (manifold system) capable of delivering the performance the application demanded.

The selected system offered significantly higher flow rate capability while maintaining stable gas delivery at the lower operating pressures required by the customer’s cutting process.

Although gas distribution boards are an established technology, selecting the correct system requires careful consideration of the application. Incorrect sizing or specification can lead to pressure drops, inconsistent gas delivery and reduced process performance.

By understanding the customer’s requirements in detail, Weldfast was able to recommend a solution that delivered reliable, consistent gas distribution across the entire production line.

Investing in Long Term Performance

Unlike simpler cylinder based installations, this represented a longer term infrastructure investment.

While the initial cost was higher, the improved operational reliability and reduction in production downtime provided significant long term value.

With a single bulk gas source supplying the entire system, scheduled refilling replaced reactive cylinder changes, helping production run more efficiently and predictably.

Key Benefits

Consistent Gas Supply

A regulated outlet pressure provides a reliable and stable gas supply across every cutting station.

Reduced Downtime

Replacing multiple cylinders with a single bulk supply eliminates unexpected interruptions caused by individual cylinders running empty.

Improved Process Performance

The correctly specified manifold system delivers the required flow rates over longer pipe runs without compromising pressure or consistency.

Increased Operational Efficiency

Scheduled bulk gas refills reduce operator intervention, allowing production teams to focus on manufacturing rather than managing gas supplies.

Expert Technical Specification

Rather than selecting equipment from a catalogue, Weldfast analysed the application’s operating data to ensure the chosen solution matched the customer’s exact requirements.

Technical Expertise That Delivers the Right Solution

At Weldfast, we know that successful gas distribution systems are about more than simply supplying equipment.

By understanding flow rates, working pressures, gas consumption and the demands of each individual application, we help customers select solutions that improve reliability, maximise performance and reduce costly downtime.

Whether you’re upgrading an existing installation or planning a new gas distribution system, our technical team can help specify the right solution for your application.
